Eminent jurist Hira Lal Sibal, father of Union minister Kapil Sibal, is a witness to the making of Chandigarh—independent India's first planned modern city, and the journey of its inseparable companion the Sukhna Lake since its inception. For over half a century, he has loved to begin his day with an early morning walk at the lake—the most-visited tourist spot in the City Beautiful—a serene spot created to make its residents relax and rejuvenate. But only till this summer, as the struggling lake is on the verge of drying up completely.
Recollecting the Sukhna's glorious past, Sibal, a nonagenarian, reminisces, “The lake was like a beautiful necklace gifted to a newly-wed bride. But we seem to have already abandoned the bride.”
Chandigarh was the gift of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who wanted a modern city for the people. Nehru had said, “This shall be the new city of free India, totally fresh and wholly responsive to the aspirations of the future generations of this great country.” And, the Sukhna Lake was created to add beauty to the city by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik hills.
